Letters to Florence N. Levy [manuscript], 1899-1918.

Two of the letters, 1899 November 20 and 1900 May 29 are rejection letters stating that the Century Company will not publish the "American Art Annual" because the officers and president see no prospect of financial returns in it. Levy's material was returned with the first letter. The collection also contains a letter, 1908 May 21, returning a photo of a house at Chaumont near Neuchâtel and inquiring about the people in it, including Madame Viardot-Garcia and her grandchildren; and a letter, 1918 September 13, describing the many talents of Gilder's brother, Robert F. Gilder, a newspaperman, painter, and archaeologist.

Joseph Benson Gilder (1858-1936) was an American editor, author and banker. He was a founder and co-editor of The Critic, a New York literary periodical; editor of its successor Putnam's Magazine; and editor of the New York Times Book Review. The Century Company was founded in New York City in 1881. Century published magazines including the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine and St. Nicholas and publications such as Battles and Leaders of the Civil War.
